My wife and I are having a debate about a child safety issue?

My 22month old son plays around the back yard. There is a cover over the jacuzzi which is securely locked so that he cannot open it. But he likes to climb above it and run around. IT is very sturdy and will not cave into the water. In fact, I even use it as a wood working area becaus it’s like a large work table.
At any rate, my wife thinks it’s very dangerous to let him play on top of this pad, and I disagree. What does the YAHOO ANSWER community think?

I’d be leary too. Maybe he wont fall in but could he fall off? Is it above ground or in ground. You can never be too safe around water with babies.

The little ones can be more comfortable with it being there know that you say its safely locked and was smart enough to use pool fence or something similar around the lock works and reasonably sturdy.

I’m sorry but I agree with your wife.
First off this is a 22 month old child so he should be watched at all times.
Second he is climbing on something. In a toddlers mind if it is ok to climb one thing he can climb all things. So once you let him climb he will want to climb everything else
Third if is playing with or on something he will think he can do it all the time. Even if it is closed or open. So if he sees it is open he will not understand why he can’t climb up the ladder to play on it. This will confuse him.
He shouldn’t be able to do this. Get him one of those little slides that he can climb up on and slide down. This is more fun and more safe than a jacuzzi.
Sorry I had to agree with your wife, but I think she’s right on this one.

I think I would have to agree with your wife accidents are simply that , accidents , and a preventable accident like this one is easy to prevent , please take your wife’s advice this is not safe!

when it comes to that, i’d say… better safe than sorry. and then he could learn that its never okay to play on it, in case he ever gets out there and is being watched by a babysitter or someone else.

For him falling off thats not know how to take the hot tub im sure there is the hot tub im sure there is the danger of other space for him to not good thing also he may try to right now but.

You would hate your self if anything ever unpredictable happened….You might want to make a plywood cover to put under the cover….better safe than sorry…you can always pull that splinter out..but you cannot replace a child.

I’m with your wife on this one. I just think if he think it’s fine to do it at your house (where it’s secure) he’ll do it at other houses (which may not be secure like yours).

It’s never a good idea to let a child play around water. He may not be able to open it now, but one day he will and it will be a hard habit to break. He could also fall off. Sorry, I’m mom on this one.

If it is sturdy enough to stand on, I guess it is okay. But make sure your wife knows how sturdy it is. Have her stand on it to show her its safe.

I have a 2 year old and 1 year old and wouldn’t let them near it. It is outside and has a lot of weather changes and can slowly wear out the cover. You might not notice it but one time he could climb on it and it could cave in. It happened to ours once when there was a really bad snow storm. Just be careful.
