Child safe blinds

March 10th, 2010
Lancashire Rose Blinds asked:

is nothing more important to Lancashire Rose Blinds than the safety of its customers, particularly babies and young children.

Lancashire rose Blinds is especially mindful of the issues of child safety when it comes to window coverings. The loops of pull cords, chains and bead cords are a potential hazard to young children who may become entangled in them. To avoid this possibility, we would like to share some ideas on keeping your children away from potential harm.

Keep your windows child-safe

Keep babies’ cots well away from windows, and ensure that all blind cords are out of reach. This may mean not placing furniture next to windows – toddlers love climbing! Also remember that as your toddler grows the can climb on living room furniture such as sofas, then they ahave acess to the cords. It only takes afew seconds left alone, for your toddler to get into mischief. We child proof our sockets to stop little fingers poking them, we child proof our stairs to stop little people climbing them, why do we forget our window blinds.

Reduce the hazard

It is important to be aware at all times of child safety around the home. An extra safety measure is the installation of a safety device that either removes the cord loop or limits access to cords. A A simple device is a child safety cord or cleat which is screwed to the wall, then the cord is wrapped around it, now little fingers can not get near them.

That is why ours are free

Lancashire Rose blinds are commited to child safety, that is wht eevry blind ordered comes with a free child safety cord. Even if you do not buy blinds from us you can still purchase a child safety cleat from our shop. Keep your child away from trailing blinds cord and keep them safe.

Internet Safety for Children

February 27th, 2010
Stuart Perryman asked:

All parents have the responsibility of giving their children a good education, clothing, a roof over their heads and anything else that they may need. Unfortunately this is not enough since they also need to get guidance on how to behave. The Internet has grown rapidly and many parents are now concerned with their kids’ safety on the Internet. There have been some steps that have been taken to make sure they are well protected against the vices found on the Internet but more still needs to be done.

While internet can provide a huge learning resource and offer hours of thrill to the kids, it is also in the same measure dangerous to the moral development of the young ones. As a result parents have been worrying about the safety of their kids behind the screens with most censorship software proving futile. Over the years of the internet, there has been concern about the pornographic content such as videos, graphics and text information. More extreme situation has evolved with the popularity of chat rooms and instant messaging. It is well know of how some adults will pose as kids and chat with unsuspicious children while at some cases they organize secret meetings with the kids. Although some sites have put up some security check-points to avoid such scenarios, majority have not succeeded in the playoff.

There are sites that have explicit graphics which children have access to. Not all of them have warning messages on the homepage to let the user know the kind of site they are getting into. The biggest problem is that there is no restriction when you access the site therefore even children can view them. Another problem parents face is Spam emails that have erotic pictures, videos or information.

While a way of guarding kids from the exposure to such adult content is still at large, a few internet safety rules for kids can ensure the safety of the kids. Advise your kids to avoid exposing their personal information on the net. Details including their names, school, location, and phone numbers among other should not be misused. The children should not accept to meet persons from the internet without a parent or guardian being around.

Limit the amount of time that your children spend on the Internet. This is because the more time they spend online the more they are likely to be exposed to unsafe content. Use software that will filter explicit sites to ensure child safety on Internet.

Can a person name a child anything they wish without regard to their happiness or safety?

February 19th, 2010
Skye C asked:

This will sound bizarre, and I am not wanting to debate “racism” (which for the record I am NOT a racist) but I want opinions on a mother naming her child after a white supremacist group. In my “humble” opinion it is not only immoral, it is not in the best interest of the child’s happiness or SAFETY! Does anyone, besides me, see this as potential child endangerment?? Thanks for your help on this one. It means more to me than one can imagine by just reading this post.

Child Safety Seats for the Car

February 9th, 2010
Gabriella Gometra asked:

As your child grows, several different child safety car seats will need to be purchased. Each time you buy a new car seat, mail the registration postcard so that you will be informed if there is a recall. Recalls of car seats are very common because documentation of car seat performance continues even after manufacturing. Contact your local health department for classes on child safety or inspections of car seat installations. Differing locations may use differing personnel, such as the local hospital or fire department to conduct safety classes. Below are some things you may learn about car safety for children.

Put your child in the back seat of the car. Most automobiles have airbags in the front seats and a child in a safety seat should not be placed in a front of one. The airbag is a bit too powerful for a child’s small mass, and children have been hurt by airbags. Even if there is no airbag, a child is safer in the back. If a car seat is rear-facing, as it should be for small infants, parents can use a special mirror to help them occasionally peek at their child’s face. Some parents hate to have the baby somewhat out of sight, but they can usually put their baby to sleep in a crib out of sight. Remember the instinct to keep a child close and in sight will not help the child in a car crash if the child is not safely restrained.

Garage sales and secondhand baby stuff is a great way to save money, but not for child safety seats. You never can tell if a seat has been in an accident and such seats should not be re-used. Also seats that are more than five years old should not be re-used. Seats that have been in a recall should not be re-used. This is why you should buy your own seat and send in your registration card.

Another reason to buy a new seat is so that you will have the instructions necessary to proper install your car seat. Read the instructions and follow them. We repeat, read the instructions and follow them. If your car seat needs some kind of kind of tether strap to secure the seat to the car in addition to the regular seat belt, be sure to use it. If you drive an older model of car that has no anchor to secure the tether strap, call a local dealer of your model and order a bracket to have installed in your vehicle.

Since 2002, cars in the United States are required to have a LATCH system as part of their design. LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren. This system makes installation of car seats easier than before. LATCH is a built-in system of anchors and tethers to secure car seats. It works very well with the newer child car seats. For more information about how to put a child car seat in a car with LATCH, see Learning About LATCH by Evenflo.

Identification for Your Child

February 2nd, 2010
Danial Holland asked:

Take a moment and think about it. When you consider the fact that, as adults, we would never consider leaving the house without our id. We spend thousands on home and car alarms, we are even protecting our family pets with microchips; however, our most cherished possessions, our children, leave home without any identification.

Here are some questions:

-         Have you taken the time to record your child’s fingerprints, gather a hair sample for DNA purposes, record all his/her specific identification, including specific identifying features and a photograph of your child in a Child ID kit? If so, is it up to date?

-         In the event of a motor vehicle accident, in which you have been rendered unconscious, do the emergency medical professionals have a quick way of accessing your child’s specific medical history, including your child’s blood type, medical provider, allergies, any medications they may be taking at the time, or, even your family’s doctor’s name and phone number?

-         If you were on vacation with your children and they became lost or separated from you, or worse, arrived at a hospital, unconscious, as a John Doe, how or who would notify you and how would they know to do so?

-         Do you or your husband, for that matter; carry your child’s specific identification,

this should include an up to date picture?

-         Do you, as responsible parents, take the time to talk with your children about child safety?

-         If you became separated from your child in a crowd, would someone be able to contact you directly, or even know who your child was?

If your answer was no or I don’t know, don’t worry, you are not alone. The sad fact of the matter is that children do not carry identification; if they did they would likely loose it!

Given today’s world, it’s becoming a necessity for children to carry identification. This fact was clearly illustrated through recent tragic natural disasters such as the tsunami, hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Pakistan. With each of these disasters, we’ve witnessed far too many unidentified children.

When thinking of child identification, often, fingerprints and hair samples are the first things that enter our mind. There are far too many companies that profess to provide your child with identification.

Let me inform you that 99.9% of those companies are passive in nature.

Fingerprints, DNA information, pictures and even dental records will and are only ever used after the fact. Passive information. Think of it as locking the barn after the horse gets away. It’s unfortunate that as parents, we feel that we have done all possible to protect our children by having recorded this information. This is the first step, and a very important step in the safety of your child; however, as a parent, the only time you ever want to look at your child’s identification kit is and should be when you update it. This is a very important step towards safeguarding against the unthinkable. Few people are aware that children’s fingerprints are actually changing for the first 4-5 years of their life; therefore, it is imperative that this information be updated at least once a year, and every 6 months for the first three years of a child’s life.

When looking for a child identification provider, keep in mind the old adage ” An once of prevention far outweighs a pound of cure”. If all the company provides you with are a fingerprint kit, keep looking! One such proactive provider of child safety and identification is Child ID Labels.

The purpose of this article is not to alarm you but to inform you, as we are all aware, information is a powerful tool. If, in reading this, you took a moment to think about your child’s safety, please email this article to as many people as you know and encourage them to do the same. Your children are, after all, your most valuable possessions as well as our future.
