Child Safety in the Kitchen

May 20th, 2010
Kimberly Wilson asked:

When a child is hurt and crying, the pain is felt within the core of its mother’s being. Literally. Her stomach tightens. She is short of breath. She is paralyzed with guilt for not being there to keep her baby safe in that split second. If inflicting the same wound to herself would take away her baby’s pain, she would do it a hundred times over in a heartbeat. Her baby is a treasure to be kept safe from harm’s way. Every precaution is taken to keep her baby safe from harm, from food to choosing a proper nanny to child-proofing the kitchen. Kitchens are the most dangerous area of the home. It has knives, cleaning chemicals and hot ovens. Moms are often busy cooking and moving around  quickly so little ones often go unnoticed. They either get shuffled and bumped around or, even worse, start exploring cabinets and drawers. Here is one way to keep your baby safe in the kitchen.

Kitchens are not all designed the same way. Typically, they have 1 or 2 entryways, while others have a more open layout that  reaches to the dining area. This method of training works well with all kitchens. There is only a slight difference with the more open layout.  Begin by placing masking tape or colored ribbon on the floor of all entryways from wall to wall. Bring your child to the line. With the side of your palm, trace the line and say, “No passing.” Repeat this a few times, giving good eye contact and making sure your child looks at what you are doing. You can also use your hand to create an invisible door by raising it up and down as if a door were there. When your child crosses the line say firmly, “No passing.” Repeat the hand motions along the line and in the air. If you use timeouts on your 2-year-old, you can give her a timeout. Wait a few seconds and praise her if she does not pass the line. It took her a lot of self-control not to pass the line. You will need to follow these steps until she gets the message. If your child does not follow the rules after a few tries, do not get discouraged. Just be consistent and be patient. Even a 6 month old can understand and obey what you want her to do. If your kitchen has an open layout, you can put tape on the no passing zones, 2 feet in front of the oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher or just a big box around the cooking area.

When your child has successfully not passed the tape line for a period of time, you still need the tape in place and still keep a close eye on her. Children like to test out the boundaries from time to time to make sure they are still there and also that they have not been missing out on any “fun”. It is highly recommended that you still child proof your kitchen to keep her safe, especially the cabinets that have chemicals and dangerous objects in them.

May 12th, 2010
Dalo78 asked:

Where can I find the manufactures recommendations on child safety seats in the Ford Ranger jump seats. I have looked on the website and can’t seem to locate the info. I know they don’t recommend children riding in those seats but I need the info showing Ford’s recommendations.
I know it isn’t safe. My ex is transporting my car seat age kids in his Ranger, but I need actual documentation saying that it is not recommended by the manufacturer to be able to get him to stop.

Relationship of Child Safety and Involvement with After-school Programs in Florida

May 9th, 2010
Business Local Listings asked:

The after-school programs provided by schools in Hollywood, Florida; Pembroke Pines, Broward County, and Dade County initially aim to help children academically. Tutors of these after-school programs provide additional support systems for kids who are having difficulties coping with their studies.

However, an interesting observation on these special school programs have been found to have a relationship with statistics on the incidence of violence towards school children. Statistics from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) of the US Bureau of Justice have shown that the rate of violence from 1973 to 2008 have steadily decreased since the emergence of after-school programs. Rates on crimes such as rape, robbery, murder, and assault have decreased by a 10 to 20 percent range within a span of 35 years. This survey was conducted as a follow-up study on another statistic regarding the fact that schools dismiss their last class at 3 pm, which is also the same hour when violence against under-aged children are at its highest.

After-school tutoring and enrichment programs for children from grades K-5 and up in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Broward County, and Dade County, Florida have done just that. Such a statistic on violence towards school children is truly alarming and such information has pushed educational institutions in Florida to further develop their after-school programs to not only help kids, but encourage more of them to actually take part in these activities. With most families having both parents working, after school tutoring and enrichment programs are needed more than ever. This service offered by the school unloads parents of the anxiety of their child’s academic performance and safety after the bell rings and classes are dismissed. These programs also provide a wide set of options that benefit the kids, the parents, and the community. Social and emotional learning is part of the after-school curriculum whose objective is to go beyond the borders of academics and into the child’s socio-emotional development. Integrating this aspect of development with the curriculum fills some of the gap children feel from their parents brought about by poor communication or dysfunctional relationships in the home. It’s a lot like character education except that it is more in depth and a holistic approach to a child’s emotional, psychological, and social learning. In addition to after-school programs, summer camps have also been proven to be good venues for the cognitive and social development of young school children.

Implementation of special school programs outside the borders of academic learning requires time, resources, and commitment from the school, the parents, community and the government. The collaborative efforts of these units will ensure the success of the program. This requires a structured set of plans that ultimately aim to provide the kids with safety and enrichment from their experiences. Teachers should set situations for maximum opportunity for growth and learning for the kids and themselves. Furthermore, after-school programs also serve as a venue for observing the special interests of children like science, arts, music, technology, and other topics. With these regular observations, schools can then adjust their academic curriculum to challenge and encourage kids to do better and keep them out of the streets and out of trouble.

Regular assessment, specifically for K-5 after-school programs in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Broward, and Dade County, Florida, have been conducted in various schools in state. Pembroke Pines and Hollywood’s after-school programs are being annually revised to cater specifically to their school children. Enrichment and tutoring programs in Broward and Dade County have also gotten the attention of many parents looking for a support system for their children’s academic needs. The assessment of these institutions aim to pinpoint any weak areas, as well as develop the stronger aspects of the existing programs. Using gathered data for improvement and designing effective assessment measures are continuously being done to achieve the objectives of everyone involved.

What You Need To Know About Pool Safety

May 6th, 2010
Campbell.Grenier asked:

Across the nation, millions of children are looking for relief from the intense heat. Naturally, swimming pools are very popular - intended for enjoyment, recreation, and relaxation. According to ABC Safety, however, drowning is the number one killer of children under the age of five. Each year, hundreds of children are killed and thousands more are injured in pool-related accidents. Safe Kids USA, a child safety advocacy group, reports that nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in swimming pools every year. The same group reports that another 2,700 submersion injuries also occur annually. There are a few things we as parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, or other caregivers can do to reduce the chance of such a tragic accident.

1. Adult Supervision

We, as parents, know that a child can get in trouble or hurt within a matter of seconds. Knowing that, we are sure to keep a vigilant eye on them as they play. As you can imagine, this becomes even more important when children are in and around swimming pools. It is not uncommon to be interrupted by a ringing phone, or distracted by another child or your pet, while enjoying an afternoon at the pool with your children. Just turning your attention from the pool for a brief moment is enough time for a child to drown.

2. Every Pool Needs A Proper Barrier

We just can’t be too cautious when there is even the smallest chance that a child may be near a pool. What some may not know is that there are many different types of safety equipment that can be used or installed to decrease the chance of a pool-related injury. One popular and effective option is to place a barrier around the entire pool. The best barriers are very sturdy, at least four feet tall, and completely encircle the body of water. Other steps can be taken to further secure the pool area including placing locks on gates and doors that lead to the area, installing alarms that will sound if the area is entered, and placing a heavy duty cover over the pool made specifically to keep objects that may fall in the pool area out of the water. The best covers will withstand the weight of two adults and one child.

3. Use Properly Secured Drain Covers

Though they are probably the last thing we tend to worry about when our children are in the pool, statistics show that drains pose a large threat for drowning and are a leading cause of submersion accidents. Properly installed and secured drain covers paired with a safety vacuum release system can prevent a serious injury or even death in a situation where a child becomes trapped by the drain suction. My hope is that just by taking these simple precautions, we can all have safe, relaxed and enjoyable summer by the pool.

2000 Civic rear door child safety latch is malfunctioning & the door wont open from inside or outside?

May 2nd, 2010
Sallie N asked:

The door wouldn’t open from outside, only from inside. So I flipped the child safety latch, now the door won’t open from inside or outside! This all just started today. The door worked fine until now. Is it necessary to remove the trim panel to fix this? If so, can it be removed while the door is closed (because I cant open it)?

I need help to open my own web site. It has to do with child safety in a car seat.PLEASE HELP ME?

April 12th, 2010
gerald m asked:

I have filed for a patent and have obtained a trademark called KID-LOVE. This is a tool for use in weaving a seatbelt through the back of a childs carseat which anyone who has ever installed a childs carseat knows how difficult this can be. You place the carseat firmly in the backseat of your vehicle. Then you slide the handle with a hook type object through the back of the childs carseat and attach the seatbelt on the hook portion of the handle. You then gently pull the seatbelt through the back of the carseat. Remove the handle and connect the seatbelt. The childs carseat should now be nice and secure, thus now making your child safer and making the installation so much easier. They come in red, green, yellow and blue. If you or anyone you know would like one, please send a check or moneyorder to Kid-Love for $4.99 Plus $2.00 P&H to Kid-Love, 266 Raven Rd. ,Victoria, Texas 77905

A Child Safety Gate

April 11th, 2010
TravisOl asked:

One of the most important jobs you have to do as a parent is to keep your child always safe. Each year thousands of young children die or get injured because of accidents which often unexpectedly happen in our lives. We as parents, have always to be on the alert, especially when the baby growing so fast and starts walking by themselves. Adults must keep a watchful eye in order to keep a vigilant watch over the little ones. It sounds very paradoxical, but small children can be badly hurt by just trying to get to know their own surroundings. There are however a great number of accessories available on the market which can help parents to cope with this problem.

As you can see there are a lot of items around to help to make a super thoughtful parent out of you. If you have a two-storied house or a fire place in the living room you had better seek a child safety gate. This very accessory will provide you the needed assistance.

How to choose an appropriate child gate?

Before choosing safety gates for your child you should have in mind what particular task these gates are supposed to complete. The type of safety gates your child needs depends on where it will be mounted and its purpose. If there is a stairway in your place there is a need of a baby safety gates mounted of the top of it. This should be only hardware mounted gates but not pressure-mounted ones. While buying such a gate determine exactly which accessory pieces and installation materials will be necessary for the application. There are special safety gates which can be installed without opposing and parallel walls. Any type of child safety gate is invented to protect your little one from getting into danger.

What construction is the best?

Speaking about construction it is important to mention that the most sturdy and long-lasting gates are those which are made of metal, such gates are recommended to be used around fireplaces, for obvious reason. In this case they protect your child from getting burnt and arson. Child safety gates can be also of wood, plastic, or mesh. Wooden gates are much lighter than metal ones and as safe as metal, however they can be damaged by chewing if such a gate is intended for a pet. In other cases the material which is the gate made of is more a question of taste than functionality.

Safety gates installation

It was mentioned above that the safest gates to provide adequate security in the top of a stairway are hardware mounted gates though pressure mounted safety gates are much quicker to install. Hardware mounted safety gates take some more time to install but are essential for many applications. Pressure-mounted gates are more popular because they don’t need holes to be installed, that means there is no need of drilling, easily moved from place to place, but still there is one blemish: a pressure mounted gate over time can cause worse damage.

One more piece of advice

In order to increase the security of gates read the detailed instructions for installing before buying it. This uncomplicated advice will help you avoid any unpleasant and unexpected difficulties when you bring it home.
